In Arthurian mythology, there is a highly mystical figure belonging to the lineage of the High Priestess archetype: the Lady of the Lake. She hails not from royal houses nor is she bound to ruling dynasties; she comes from a more ancient and potent realm—a lake situated between worlds, realities, and the conscious and unconscious mind. The lake’s surface acts as a boundary between these realities, and she moves freely among them.
In the legend of Arthur, the greatest king does not derive his power and authority from another monarch; instead, the Lady of the Lake bestows it upon him once he proves himself worthy of the task. It is she who gives him Excalibur, the royal sword that must be returned to its source—the lake—upon his death. In this tale, ultimate power belongs to the mystical—a power that bears a woman’s face and originates from dark waters.
The Lady of the Lake is deeply connected to the wild landscape surrounding the water; the lake itself is like an eye, and to gaze into it is to encounter one’s own intuitive nature. She belongs to no courtly society, king, or wizard—she belongs to the moss, the deep waters, and the trees. Her mantra is: "The landscape is the spirit."
